Announcement of the Croatian Banking Association: Be careful when paying, check the payee’s data
Recently, new fraud attempts have been noticed in which the attacker wants to get money from bank account owners, by directing money payments to the payee's wrong accounts. Attackers present themselves to business entities mostly by phone or e-mail as business entrepreneurs, offer new cooperation on a new project, or inform via a fake e-mail address about a change of the payee’s account number with whom the company already has a business relationship or uses their services. Based on this information, the company representative transfer the money into an account number that is not actually the payee's real account.
In relation to the mentioned fraud attempts, we warn all payers to definitely increase caution when paying, especially if they are paying a payee for the first time or if they received information via e-mail about a change of the payee's account number. We suggest that in the case of information about a change of an account, check the data about the payee once again, if possible through another communication channel than e-mail (e.g. by phone or on the official website of the business entity). Additionally, we suggest to compare the e-mail address of the business entity from which such a warning was sent with the e-mail addresses on the official website of the business entity.
We draw your attention again to the fact that in cases of computer infection with malicious code, the attacker has access to all applications on the computer, including the user's e-mail system. In these cases, the attacker can have insight into the e-mail addresses of the computer owner and, based on previous correspondence, can create fake e-mail addresses of business entities with which the owner is in contact.
Also, please note that computers can be infected in various ways, for example, by opening infected e-mail attachments, opening links with malicious code on the Internet, using remote computer monitoring programs, etc. It is definitely recommended that computer owners continuously take care of the security of their computers and to engage additional professional IT support immediately after detecting the presence of malicious code for a comprehensive approach to solving the cause of the security breach of their IT systems.
And finally, for the best protection, be sure to remove the smart card from the reader or USB key from the computer after using e-zaba business banking.
